California Renter’s Credit

Individuals who live the state of California may be able to receive a Renter’s Credit.

Qualifications:

You must meet all the following to qualify:

  1. You were a California resident for the entire year
  2. Your California adjusted gross income (AGI) is:

$39,062 or less if filing status is Single

$39,062 or less if filing Married/RDP Filing Separately

$78,125 or less if filing Head of Household

$78,125 or less if filing Qualified Widow(er)

$78,125 or less if filing Married/RDP Filing Jointly

  1. You paid rent for at least half the year for property in California that was your principal residence
  2. The property you rented was not exempt from California property tax
  3. You did not live with another person for more than half the year (such as a parent) who claimed you as a dependent
  4. You were not a minor living with and under the care of a parent, foster parent, or legal guardian
  5. You or your spouse/RDP was not granted a homeowner’s property tax exemption during the tax year.

Credit Amounts:

  1. $60 if filing Single
  2. $60 if filing Married/RDP Filing Separately
  3. $120 if filing Head of Household
  4. $120 if filing Qualifying Widow(er)
  5. $120 if filing Married/RDP Filing Jointly
